Direct answer
Major dental equipment should be identified before construction documents are completed because equipment choices affect room dimensions, clearances, cabinetry, plumbing, drainage, suction, compressed air, power, data, ventilation, shielding and delivery routes. Final vendor specifications—not generic assumptions—should drive the coordinated service points used for construction.
01
Build an equipment responsibility matrix
The owner, design-builder and equipment vendors should know who selects, supplies, receives, installs, connects, tests and trains for every major item. This avoids gaps between a vendor quotation and the construction scope.
- Dental chairs, delivery units and lights
- Vacuum, compressor and separation equipment
- Sterilizers, instrument washers and water treatment
- Intraoral, panoramic and cone-beam imaging
- Cabinetry, sinks and clinical casework
- IT, phones, access control and surveillance
- Emergency equipment and clinical gases where applicable
- Refrigeration, laboratory and specialty equipment
02
Sterilization is a workflow, not a countertop
RCDSO’s IPAC guidance describes one-directional instrument flow with clear separation of dirty and clean functions. The plan should support receiving and decontamination, rinsing and drying, preparation and packaging, sterilization and clean storage.
Sink location, splash control, clean storage, equipment heat loads, service clearances and manufacturer requirements can all change the room plan and mechanical design.
03
Coordinate approval and commissioning
Imaging, CT and sedation-related equipment can trigger additional approval or facility requirements. Lead times for equipment and authority review must be integrated into the project schedule.
Before opening, verify connections, testing, manuals, warranties, staff training and responsibility for ongoing quality assurance and maintenance.
Questions
Frequently asked questions
When should the dental supplier join the project?
During clinical planning, before final service locations and construction documents are fixed.
Can equipment be changed during construction?
Sometimes, but even apparently similar models can have different clearances and utility requirements. The effect should be reviewed before approval.
Does Build In York sell dental equipment?
Our role is to coordinate the selected equipment with the clinic design, construction and opening sequence. Vendor and procurement arrangements are confirmed for each project.
